As a school psychologist and educational consultant, I have been presenting to parents and educators for over 35 years. During one seminar with a group of teachers, I mentioned that some teachers spend the first one or two months of the beginning of the school year reviewing the academic skills that their students have lost. One teacher said, “Ann, I spend the first three months.”

When my children were in elementary school, I created The Summer Learning Chart for them to prevent developing “Brain Mush” during the summer! :) This system was a fun way to document (with stickers on each of their own charts) and to track their activities involving reading, writing, math and other important skills, such as creativity, problem solving, household chores, etc. As a busy mother of 5, it was necessary, as well as good for them, for me to create a system that included activities that could be completed by my children independently (without my direct and continued involvement) and that I could check later in the day.

I recently learned the official term for “Brain Mush”: The Summer Slide.
